The Incredible Growth of Python

We recently explored how wealthy countries (those defined as high-income by the World Bank) tend to visit a different set of technologies than the rest of the world. Among the largest differences we saw was in the programming language Python. When we focus on high-income countries, the growth of Python is even larger than it might appear from tools like Stack Overflow Trends, or in other rankings that consider global software development. In this post, we’ll explore the extraordinary growth of the Python programming language in the last five years, as seen by Stack Overflow traffic within high-income countries. The term “fastest-growing” can be hard to define precisely, but we make the case that Python has a solid claim to being the fastest-growing major programming language. All the numbers discussed in this post are for high-income countries; they’re generally representative of trends in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, and other such countries, which in com...

3 Reasons why you need a programming blog

One of the best things I ever did for my dev career: A little story and three reasons why you should start a programming portfolio website right now. At PyCon Germany I chatted with Astrid, a freelance Python (Django) developer looking for ways to improve her career and to find more contracts. Astrid seemed quite frustrated with her situation—it was tough for her to get the contracts and jobs she really wanted. Often when she sent out her resume for more desirable gigs she wouldn’t even receive an answer. It sounded like she was stuck with a certain quality of clients and couldn’t really push past that invisible barrier. I always love to help a sister (or brother) out and went into full-on diagnosing mode. Usually I just end up spouting unsolicited advice in these situations but with Astrid I think I actually hit the nail on the head… 😉 Eventually I asked Astrid if she had a website or blog as a “programmer portfolio” of sorts. She did not. And I think that was a BIG mistake ...

How I got into programming

Hi everyone! I hope all of you are doing great. If you have been following my blog for a while and keeping a lookout at the comments then you might know a bit about me. If you don’t then today I am going to share my story. I am freshman at Colgate university in upstate New York (more on this later). I have been programming since I was 12 years old and it all began because of an online multiplayer game called Club Penguin. I used to play that game and like every 12 year old I wanted to excell in it; the only problem was that you had to pay in order to get ahead of everyone else. I wanted to buy stuff without paying and that is how I came across a software called Penguin Storm. That software allowed a person to buy anything without paying a dime. Everything was well and good until I found that all of the stuff which I was buying was being displayed only in that software and wasn’t actually affecting the real game. This led me on a quest to figure out how that software worked. It a...

In this article, we are going to explore top 5 Machine Learning Libraries in Python. If you are a developer, they will help you design a robust and performance-centered machine learning apps in Python. Their functionality is unmatched and can be directly imported into your application. So, why is Python so popular or why is it considered best programming language for machine learning in particular situations? Often regarded as utilitarian, Python is a general-purpose language specifically designed to simplify read and write. The language doesn’t overemphasize on conventional syntax, making it easier to wor...

Beginning a Blog - Django Web Development

In this sixth Django web development with Python tutorial, we're going to cover working with models in Django. Our plan is to add the final element of our website: a blog. So far, we've worked with views and a controller, but have not really done anything with models. First off, what are models? Models contain "meta data" regarding your application's data. Generally, these models are used to describe just the elements in your database, but they can be built up to be much more than just that. Second, we know we want to make a blog. Is this blog a part of our "personal" website, or would it make more sense to be its own app? It could be a part of our personal app, but it really ought to be its own entirely. Plus, chances are, we're going to want to incorporate a blog on other apps, so let's make a new app: python manage.py startapp blog. We just added a new app. What is the first thing we should do? Right, install it! mysite/settings.py ...
